The Beginners Guide for Buying & Wearing Hair Wigs (2019)

To better understand wig types, it is useful to know how they are constructed. We’re going to start by explaining what classic or standard caps are. Here, a machine sews-in wefts of hair to create a wig. There is no lace or mesh material on these caps. Since the hair is sewn in wefts, that creates rows of hair on the cap.

Understanding Capless Wigs

How much of an opening there is between these wefts also determines the type of a standard cap. This is where the word “capless” comes in. It might be confusing because we’re talking about a wig cap that is also known as a “capless cap”.

  • If the opening is up to 75% that means it is a capless wig
  • If it’s 90% or more open, it is called a full capless.
  • There is also 100% capless, which is self-explanatory. The more open space you get, the more comfortable a hairpiece is because more air can go through it.

All of these standard or classic caps are usually the cheapest option out there. However, they are not as realistic as some other types like monofilament.

Monofilament Caps

Monofilament caps are a general term for wigs that manufacturers make with a mesh lace fabric. Each hair is hand sewn on the lace. Monofilament varieties include:

  • Full lace wigs that constructed only out of sheer lace
  • 360 wigs with lace going all around the hairline
  • Lace frontal wigs that have lace only at the front
  • Monofilament part with only a small section of lace at the parting
  • The crown of monofilament that has lace material only on the crown area
  • The top of monofilament where sheer lace is sewn-in on the top of the wig

Except for a full lace wig, all other types usually have a classic cap construction on parts without lace. The most advanced hairpiece construction is a silk top.

Wigs are also a great way to change your look completely without having to cut or dye your tresses. If you want a dramatic change and a new, trendy look, installing a wig can make all the difference. Modern wigs look amazing and most of them are well made. New technologies have also greatly influenced wig making process.

After you have decided to buy a wig, you may feel overwhelmed by all the different choices and are not sure which one to buy. You must choose a wig type, hair type, density, texture, length, and measure your head to buy the right size.

All of that can seem a bit complicated and that’s why we have compiled an easy-to-follow wig buying guide that will help you through the whole process! We have also included some styling and maintenance tips that will help you care for your new wig.

Wig Types

The first thing you need to decide when buying a wig is a wig type. There are three most popular ones that you might have already heard about. We have a full lace wig, 360 frontal wigs, and a lace front wig, and all of them give amazing results. You should pick according to your needs and wishes so we’re going to explain how each one works.

Full Lace Wigs

The full lace is one of the most expensive wigs you can buy, but there are very good reasons for it. As you can guess by the name, it has lace all around. So, the whole cap is made of light mesh material which is far superior to traditional caps.

The hair is not sewn on by a machine, but rather each hair is attached by hand. Because of this meticulous and time-consuming process, the price goes up in comparison to other types. The reason why having the whole cap made of lace is better than anything else is the natural and seamless look you get.

Your hairline will look real and perfect and you can also part your hair any way you want to. You can ever have cornrows because the lace ensures a realistic parting everywhere. Wearing a high ponytail or different updos is also not a problem with a full lace wig so you have countless style options. Since the lace is very thin, a full lace is so comfortable to wear, it will feel just like your natural hair.

We recommend that you select this type if you want the most natural look possible. This hairpiece will mimic your natural strands perfectly no one will ever dream that you’re wearing a wig. Although it is more expensive than other types, the look and feel of this wig are simply not comparable to cheaper varieties.

The full lace is perfect for our most demanding customers who only want the absolute best. The only downside to a full lace is that you do not have the option to sew in any additional bundles on the cap to make it fuller.

360 Frontal Wig

It consists out of a cap on the crown area of the head and mesh material going all around the hairline. This is a very clever design because you still get the lace material where it matters the most. In other words, your hairline, but the cost of making it is cheaper because there’s also a cap in the middle.

The lace has individual hairs sewn by hand and it imitates a natural hairline, making it indistinguishable from real strands growing out of your scalp. This type of wig is immensely versatile because you have the option to try out all kinds of different styles, including high ponytails and updos.

The 360 lace also allows you to part your strands in many ways, like in the middle or on the sides. We recommend a 360 wig if you need something relatively affordable and realistic looking. You will be amazed how a 360 frontal completely transforms your style while looking seamless. This type of hairpiece will satisfy even some of our most demanding customers.

Lace Front Wig

It is a wig type that has lace only at the front, unlike a full lace one. Always constructed in a way that you get a normal cap and mesh material at the front, usually going from one temple to the other. The hair on the cap is sewn by a machine and the hair on the lace is hand sewn.

Because of that type of construction, it is the cheapest out of the three. The lace is strategically positioned in the front so that you can still have a natural-looking hairline at the front, where it matters the most.

However, the hairline at the back will not be as natural so we don’t recommend wearing high ponytails. You also have fewer options when it comes to parting your hair. But if you’re not so hung up that, a lace front wig will do the job, it is still considered to be a high-quality hairpiece. Many women like having a regular cap along with the lace because it feels more secure and sturdy.

Another advantage of having a cap and not only lace is that you can add more bundles to your wig. You do that by buying some bundles that are the same as the hair on the wig and you simply sew it onto the cap. It is very simple, and you can do it yourself. But if you don’t plan on adding additional bundles yourself, but still want a full look, go for a higher density lace front wig.

Alternative: Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are not wigs, but we thought that it would be fair to include them there too. Especially if you have the ability or prefer them over the wigs. We also wrote a full-on extensions guide, which you might want to check out.

What Does the Wig Density Mean?

Density means how much hair there is on a cap. It determines the thickness and overall volume of the hair. If the density is very low, you will get thin and fine hair and if it’s higher, you will get more thickness.

You need to determine what kind of look you’re going for to select the right density percentage. 90% is the lowest density that you can get, and it is not recommended just like the 100 – 110% density. 130% density is a great option because it is very similar to real hair.

With full lace wigs, the density is predetermined, and you must choose it when purchasing. These wigs usually have normal density. 360 frontal and lace front wigs are better for girls who want more density and volume because you have the option to add as many bundles as you can fit onto the wig. But you will mostly see the density represented by a certain percentage. We will explain each one so that you can choose what works best for you.

90% Wig Density

This is the lowest density wig that you can buy. The strands are very thin and there is barely volume. AiryHair does not sell any 90% density wigs because they’re simply not up to our standards and we don’t recommend that you use them because you won’t get good results. Although it is cheap, it is not worth it.

100% to 110% Wig Density

This is another option that is not available from the AiryHair store. The reason for that is the low density of the strands. You will not get a lot of hair on the cap and there’s very little volume. This type of density only suits women who have naturally very thin and fine hair and want to mimic that with their wig. Otherwise, we recommend that you go for higher density.

120% to 130% Wig Density

This is the most common wig density that you’ll find at most places. AiryHair wigs have a 130% default density which is the density of normal human hair.

Such wigs will look real and natural because they mimic your locks. If you’re not looking for over-the-top volume and what something to wear every day, this wig density is a great choice.

150% Wig Density

This is a good density choice for all women who like that extra volume that still looks natural. You will get a bit of a density boost and the wig will look like slightly thicker hair. It is a bit more expensive than the default density wig, but that extra thickness makes a difference.

180% Wig Density

For girls who want to look extra glamorous and love long, voluminous locks. This type of wig will give you incredible fullness and thickness that is instantly noticeable. Although the wig looks completely realistic, its density is much higher than that of normal hair. You will love all the amazing hairstyle you can make with this much hair and feel special while wearing a 180% density wig.

200% Wig Density

Extra dense wigs are for real divas out there who want to feel like a celebrity or a pop star. If you dream about mermaid-like tresses, then this is the right wig density for you. You will get noticed and be in the center of attention wherever you go. This is the most expensive option out of all others, but it is worth it for the incredible amount of hair that you get.

Wig Hair Types: Real or Synthetic?

When deciding between human and synthetic hair, you need to consider your needs as well as look as some pros and cons of each one.

Synthetic Hair Wigs

Synthetic hair is made of artificial fibers that try to mimic real hair. But what you’ll often find is that they simply do not look as realistic. You can recognize synthetic hair by the unnatural shine it has. That’s why many people use powder to reduce it.

Longevity is very short with synthetic fibers and you will very soon need to buy a new hairpiece. If your synthetic hair is not heat-friendly, you will not be able to change your style by curling or straightening your strands. Coloring is also not possible, so you must stick with the color you buy.

However, there are some pros to synthetic strands. They are very low maintenance and that is one of the main reasons why we recommend them patients in treatment. Caring for a human hair wig might simply be too much for someone who is ill and not feeling too well. The main pro is, of course, the cost. Synthetic hair is much cheaper which is great for people on a tight budget.

Real Human Hair Wigs

If you’re going for a natural look, human hair is the way to go. You can style it, color it, and choose from different textures. This type of hair will last you for a long time and you won’t have to worry about replacing it all the time. Once you purchase a wig, you can enjoy months and months of wearing your hairpiece. The only cons of real human hair are that it requires some maintenance and is more expensive. Determine what your needs are, as well as your budget, and if you do decide to go for synthetic hair, at least make sure it’s high quality.

You also have the option to choose different textures when buying a wig. See linked article to learn more. This decision should be based on whether you want to imitate your natural tresses, or you want a big style transformation. Most wigs come in straight, wavy, and curly textures.

Oftentimes, you can choose the exact type of curls that you want like kinky or deep curls. Choose a texture that compliments your face and looks natural. If you buy human hair wig, you have the option to change the texture every once in a while.

Wig Length and Texture Notes

Just like hair extensions, the wig length is measured when the hair is straight. So, if you buy a 20-inch straight wig, the body weave texture will look closer to that of 18-inch and curly is closer to 16 inches.

What Length Wig Should You Buy?

Wigs come in many different lengths, from very short to extra-long. The length you’re going to choose depends on your taste and preferences. Some girls are into short pixie cuts while others enjoy long, lustrous locks.

Before you go and pick the longest wig available, keep in mind that it will also be the most expensive one. The more hair you get, the more it will cost. Especially if this is your first wig, we recommend a normal 16 to a 20-inch length that’s not over the top. You first want to get used to the feel of the wig.

To measure your head, get a tape measure first! Also, if you want to learn more about the wig caps, see our FAQ section at the bottom of the page.

  1. Place one end on your forehead and go all around the head, following your hairline. Write the measurement down.
  2. Place the one end on your forehead again, but this time go to the back of your head, at the nape of your neck. Write it down as well.
  3. These are the main two measurements that you’ll need to determine the right size.

Wigs come usually come in small, medium, and large sizes. Most women have an average-sized head so medium will fit them great, however, some might require smaller or larger sizes. Each shop will have its sizes along with the approximate measurements for each one. You simply need to compare it to your measurements.

  • Ultra-small cap fits heads that are under 20 inches
  • Small caps are for 21-inch heads
  • Medium or average size is about 21.5 – 22.5 inches
  • A large cap fits heads larger than 22.5 inches

Keep in mind that you should not rush through this process because your new hair needs to fit you exactly right and many stores do not offer refunds.

Wig Application Methods

There are several application methods that you can choose from and all of them are pretty simple.

If you have a hairpiece with a standard cap, it usually has a comb or a clip that you can use for attachment. You can also sew-in these cap types. To do that, you need to make regular cornrows before applying your new hair. Then, when the wig is in place, you start sewing above your forehead and continue all around the hairline. For extra security, sew along the cornrows. You should use this method if you plan on wearing your wig for a longer period without taking it off. It is a more permanent method and you can rest assured that your hair is nothing going anywhere.

If you are using monofilament caps with lace parts, apart from sewing, you also have the option to tape or glue it. For taping, you would use a double-sided tape which you can buy at many stores. The most common ones are sewing, taping, and gluing and each one of them has its pros and cons. Almost every wig has a couple of combs or clips that also help to attach the wig and hold it firmly. Let’s go through the easiest way of applying your new wig.

How to Put-on a Hair Wig?

Before you start the application process, try on your wig to make sure it fits right. It should be snug on your head, not too tight and not too loose. If you have a wig that has extra lace in the front, you will need to cut it.

  1. Position your wig right and cut the lace around your hairline.
  2. To make the wig even more realistic looking, pluck some hairs from the hairline. Most wigs have equal density all around and that can sometimes look less realistic on the actual hairline because natural strands are not as dense in that area. Use tweezers to pluck a couple of hairs, but don’t overdo it.
  3. You have the option of wearing a wig cap underneath your new locks or making simple cornrows.
  4. Afterwards, proceed with the actual attachment of the wig. First see if your wig has any clips and attach those first to your head. Double check that everything is symmetrical and placed correctly.
  5. Now you need to decide whether you want to sew the wig on, glue it, or tape it.
    1. Sewing vs. Glue vs. Double-Sided Tape

Below we will list all the application types, and as you have learned already, none of them have any pros or cons.

      Sewing Wigs

If you go with sewing, you will need a needle and a thread. Start sewing on the front of your hairline and go all the way around. You can also add a couple of stitches at the crown area.

      Gluing Wigs

If you decide to glue it on, there are great gels that you can buy, made specifically for this which means they’re completely safe. Apply some glue/gel just below your natural hairline and wait a few moments until it becomes tacky. Grab the wig with your fingers and press it there. It is easier if you do this one bit at a time. To finish, blow dry that area so that it sets quicker.

      Using Tape

Using a double tape is very similar, apply it around your hairline and tape the wig on. Make sure that everything is nice and tight.

That’s pretty much it! The wig should look very realistic and natural if applied correctly and should stay on for a long period. It will behave just like your natural hair. You can also ask a friend to help you if it’s your first time or go to a salon to have it done professionally.

      How to Style a Wig?

When styling your new wig, you want to make it look as real and natural as possible. First, make sure that you have installed it correctly. It doesn’t matter which technique and method you use. Make sure that hairline looks good and everything is symmetrical.

You can try out wavy, curly, as well as straight hairstyles. When it comes to hairdos, you can do pretty much anything with a wig, the only problem can be updos and high ponytails. If you want your hair up, you can only do it if you have a full lace wig or a 360-lace wig. Only those two wig types have a completely natural hairline all around. With a full lace wig, you can even braid your whole hair.

Just like you must care for your tresses, you need to take some steps to maintain your wig as well. The more you take care of it, the longer it will last you. Whether you have a synthetic or human hair wig, the washing process is quite similar. Keep in mind that you don’t need to wash your wig as often as your natural strands. Washing it too often could wear it down over time. Also, don’t use too many products on your wig because that leads to washing it more often.

      1. First, you need to take off your wig and brush it with a comb.
      2. Fill up your sink with lukewarm water and add some shampoo in it. Stir slightly.
      3. Now is the time to submerge your wig into the water. Gently massage and squeeze it while avoiding any harsh scrubbing. Get the shampoo all over the strands, as well as the lace and the cap.
      4. You can leave your wig to sit for a couple of minutes, before rinsing out.
      5. Refill your sing with warm water and this time, add some conditioner. Submerge the wig and let it sit for at least ten minutes. You want the conditioner to have time to work its magic.
      6. Rinse again and towel dry the wig. Place it on a dry towel and let it dry completely. You can also place it on a wig stand to dry, but only if the wig is straight. Curls could get ruined if you use this method.
      7. After the wig has dried, use a comb to thoroughly brush it and it’s ready to be worn again!

      Cut the Wig

One of the easiest ways to make any wig look more realistic is by simply cutting or trimming it. Although hairpieces come in a variety of cool hairstyles, the particular one you chose might not be perfect for the shape of your face. A slight trim might make all the difference. In case you’re not that handy with scissors, you can ask a hair professional to cut the hairpiece for you. He/she will also know what suits your face best and customize your wig perfectly.

Change the Color Of The Wig

If the shade of your hairpiece looks a bit weird or natural, or if the color is to uniform, you might want to think about dyeing it. However, this can only be done on wigs made out of 100% human hair, you should never, under any circumstance, color a synthetic hairpiece because it will be completely ruined. Even some highlights or pops of colors might make all the difference, the balayage technique is really good for that. Coloring is also best left to the professionals but if you’re confident in your dyeing skills, try it yourself.

      Darken the Roots

If you look at natural strands you can notice that the roots are usually slightly darker than the rest of the hair. That’s because locks can get lighter in color when exposed to the sun, while hair on the roots is young and darker. So a cool trick that makes any wig look more realistic is simply darkening the root area. For example, if you have a medium-brown hairpiece, simply color the roots into a darker brown and the transformation will be huge. This is quite easy to do at home, so there’s no need for going to a salon.

      Pluck the Hairline

Another cool trick that many girls use is plucking the hairline. If you observe natural hair, you’ll notice that nobody has a perfect, dense hairline. This is the area where strands are usually thinner and there are a lot of baby hairs sticking out. That’s what you want to achieve with the wig. Using tweezers, pluck some of the hairs from the hairline and you’ll instantly notice how better it looks. Those who are too lazy to do that, can simply buy pre-plucked wigs and problem solved!

      Buy a Wig with Fringe

As it was mentioned before, the natural look of the wig is hugely influenced by the hairline. If the hairline looks fake, everything else also won’t look good. A great trick to avoid the hairline altogether is by purchasing a wig with a fringe. It not only looks fashionable, but it covers up the hairline imperfections. Isn’t that cool?

      Style It

Some effort is needed to make your hairpiece flawless so don’t expect to just put in on and go about your day. If you’re aiming for a natural look, spending a couple extra minutes on styling can make a huge difference. There are no strict do’s and don’ts when it comes to styling because every wig is different, and you will know what works best for you. An additional tip is – if you notice that your curls are losing their shape, use a curler to restore that oomph.

Add Powder to Synthetic Wigs and Remove the Unnatural Shine

If you own a synthetic hairpiece, you know that it’s never perfectly realistic. One of the main issues is that weird sheen which is a consequence of light bouncing off of plastic fibers. No natural strands are every that shiny so it needs to be reduced. A simple and effective way to do that is by adding powder to the wig or spraying some dry shampoo. This will create a nice matte effect that will make the synthetic hairpiece look a lot more natural.

Use Products to Make It Look Flawless

There are many hair products that you can use to keep your wig in a pristine condition. Apart from the obvious ones like shampoo and conditioner, you can also use natural oils if the strands are dry, products that are designed for keeping the texture in good condition, as well as hair masks. Find a hair routine that works best for you and stick to it.

What’s the Best Place to Buy a Hair Wig?

If you have more questions about buying a wig or need additional help, you can go to your local wig store or ask a hair professional. Before every purchase, make sure that you have selected the right wig and that all the measurements are done right. It is always better to double check than to have to return your wig and order another one.

      • Why Do People Wear Wigs?

      • There are a couple of different reasons why one might decide to start wearing a wig. The first is medical issues that result in partial or full hair loss. That can happen due to chemotherapy, alopecia, trichotillomania, hypothyroidism, anemia, telogen effluvium, autoimmune diseases, stress, hormones, protein deficiency etc. If you notice that your hair is getting thinner or falling out, you should go see a doctor to determine what is causing it and get appropriate treatment. During the treatment you might want to opt for wearing a hairpiece until your natural strands recover fully.

Losing hair is very unfortunate and can be hard on women and men who often lose their confidence along with their precious locks. That’s why wearing a hairpiece, even temporarily, can make a huge difference. Another reason why people might want to buy a wig is to simply change their look. A hairpiece allows you to completely transform your hairstyle instantly, without cutting or dyeing your natural strands. Although you can achieve a similar thing with extensions, a wig doesn’t require you to have long hair; you can have extremely short locks and still get that long style.

      • Does a Wig Look Natural?

      • You may remember wigs from many years ago that didn’t look realistic, but you can rest assured that they have come a long way. Modern ones, of good quality, are indistinguishable from your real locks. If the fit is right, no one will ever suspect that it’s not your real hair. Quality wigs have a realistic hairline and are made from real hair. Many celebrities are wearing wigs and you usually do not even notice it. That’s why you should have no fear of it looking fake or unnatural.

      • How to Make a Wig Look More Realistic?

      • Regardless of which type of wig you choose, you can always use some cool tricks to make it look more natural. The first thing you can do is to ask your hair professional to style your hairpiece or even cut it so that it complements the shape of your face perfectly. The color is another important aspect if you want a seamless look. For example, if you have a very pale complexion, a black wig will look very strange.

Choose a color that’s like your natural strands or a shade that suits your skin tone. Another cool trick that most wig wearers do is plucking some hairs from the wig hairline. The thing is that most wigs are equally thick all around which is not the case with real strands because they’re usually slightly thinner around the hairline. By plucking a couple of hairs above your forehead, you create a perfect illusion. The final trick that we’d like to share with you is leaving your baby hair out so that it is visible right where the wig starts. This also creates a seamless look for your hairline.

      • How Long Does a Wig Last?

      • The longevity depends on the type of hairpiece and the hair on it. Most of the time, synthetic ones last for about one year, while human hair ones last for three years or more. Another thing that influences the lifespan is how good the wig is taken care of.

If you follow all the maintenance instructions, you can add a few extra months of life. It also depends on whether you wear it every single day and whether you have multiple ones that you change up. If you want a hairpiece that you can wear for a long time, you should go for quality and real human hair. However, if you need it only temporarily, for a couple of months, synthetic ones will also do the job.

      • What is High Density Hair?

      • High density hair means it is over 130% dense. If you’re looking for a lot of volume and thick strands, you should go above the default density. High density hair is recommended for girls who have naturally very thick hair or simply want to have a very fancy and extravagant look.

The highest density hair that you can get is about 200%. That is almost double the regular, default density which means you get A LOT of hair. If you want to look like a real diva with amazingly voluminous locks, then try a higher density hair, you will notice the difference.

      • Will Insurance Pay for My Wig?

      • Most insurance companies will pay for your wig, at least partially. However, the right term you need to use when speaking to your insurance is cranial prosthesis. First, ask your doctor to write you a prescription for it, including the ICD-9 code.

Then you need to contact your insurance and ask them about their policy regarding cranial prosthesis. Although stores will not accept any payments directly from your insurance, they can provide you with a receipt that you can use to get reimbursed by your insurance company. If they require any additional information, most stores will provide that, including AiryHair.

      • Can I Use My Hair to Make a Wig?

      • If someone you know is battling an illness and is in a need of a hairpiece, maybe you have considered donating your hair. While that is very generous, it is not as easy to do so. First of all, hair from one donor is not enough to make a full wig so your strands would be mixed with ones from other donors as well.

Custom made wigs are also very expensive and take a lot of time to make. If your loved one is suffering from a disease that’s making them lose hair rapidly, they don’t have that much time to waste and probably want their hairpiece as soon as possible. Also, human hair is not recommended for cancer patients and other people will serious illness because it’s hard for them to maintain it properly while being treated. Synthetic hair is a much better option because it can still look great but doesn’t require much maintenance.

      • What’s the Best Place to Buy Wigs?

      • Don’t just trust any company, even if it’s not AiryHair. You need to make sure that you’re dealing with a company that you can trust. Check that the store has a long history with selling hair and has a good range of quality products. Make sure that there is an address and a phone number through which you can contact the company. Beware of very low prices because there is often a very good reason why a store offers such cheap products.

They are usually not made very well, using low quality hair and will not last very long. Some stores even try to sell you hair that has already been used or has defect. Also beware of false branded wigs. Some online stores try to sell very cheap and badly made wigs under famous brands, so they charge a lot of money on it. We at AiryHair offer only quality products that withstand the test of time. The prices of our products are affordable and like those of other established stores. You simply need to follow your common sense and make sure to do some research before you buy anything.

      • How Can I Get a Free Wig?

      • In cases where your budget simply does not allow you to afford a hairpiece, there are some free options. If you live in the United States, you can try contacting the American Cancer Society or try to look for a similar organization in your country.

They will provide you with a free wig if you are a cancer patient. But do keep in mind that those are very cheap and low quality since they’re free. These wigs unfortunately won’t be very comfortable and look as good. What you can do to make it look better is going to a hair professional to style it.

      • What’s a Wig Silk Top?

      • Although lace wigs are one of the best you can buy, a silk top is on the top of the list. It is also the most expensive one out of all we have mentioned previously. Hair is tied onto a lace cap using a knot and while it looks very realistic, if you take a very close look at a lace wig, you might notice these knots. With a silk top, you get a layer of silk on top of the lace.

What that does is conceal the knots below the silk so the only thing you see is individual hairs that look like they’re growing out of the hairpiece. The silky material is usually only at the top, where you would part your hair. This is the most seamless look that you can get, and a silk top wig will look flawless. You don’t have to worry about the knots being visible or using different trick to conceal them. If you are a perfectionist and have a big budget, then definitely make sure to try out a silk top.

      • What Are Medical Wigs?

      • The term medical wigs refer to wigs that are suitable for cancer patients and people with moderate or severe hair loss. If you have lost most or all your hair, be very careful what hairpiece type you’ll choose.

There are two main reasons for that. The first is that your scalp is probably sensitive and the other is that you will need a very realistic hairpiece to hide your severe hair loss. Although the experience of losing hair is very traumatic and unfortunate, some wigs can make your life easier. You should stay away from standard caps and go with monofilament ones. If can afford it, the best choice would be a full lace wig that has been 100% hand-tied.

The lace material is very soft and light which is perfect for a sensitive scalp. It will feel very comfortable and cozy. A full lace wig is also one of the most natural-looking ones so it will look like real hair is growing out of your scalp. Isn’t that amazing?

      • What’s the Best Wig for Sensitive Scalp?

      • Any monofilament wig is good for a sensitive scalp. The best one is a hairpiece that’s made only out of lace. A general rule is the more lace, the better. A full lace wig is extremely lightweight, and the material is exceptionally soft and will not harm your scalp.

However, if you want to be extra cautious, you can also wear a comfortable wig cap underneath for more protection. Just remember to avoid capless and standard caps because they’re much heavier, less comfortable, and the thick fabric might irritate the skin even more.

      • Do I Need a Full Wig if I Have Thin Hair or Partial Hair Loss?

      • If you don’t suffer from severe hair loss, you have the option of purchasing a hair topper. It will cover the areas where your hair is thinner and create a complete look. A hair topper can blend nicely with your natural strands and look very seamless. Now, if the hair loss is getting worse, a hairpiece might be a better option. Make sure that your doctor determines the cause of hair loss and appropriate treatment.

      • Are Wigs Safe to Wear?

      • Because of the incredible improvements in hairpiece construction, modern quality wigs are 100% safe to wear. Not only are they completely harmless to your strands and scalp, but they can also protect your natural locks. If you have problems with hair thinning or loss, wearing a hairpiece can let your real hair to heal and grow again. All the application methods are very safe so you should have no worries whatsoever.

      • Can I Apply Hair Wig Myself?

      • You can do that and it’s quite simple. Regardless of which method you choose, you can find instructions online and do it in no time. It doesn’t take any special skill or tools. If you’re not feeling so confident about it, you can have it done professionally but that takes money and time set up the appointments.

We recommend that you learn at least one of these methods so you can be completely independent and do it yourself. You will have a better control of your wig and be able to fix it if something goes wrong.

      • How to Safely Remove a Wig?

      • This depends on which method you choose but removing is even easier than attaching it. If the hairpiece is sewn in, you need to find all the stitches and cut the thread. Be very careful when doing it because you don’t want to damage the wig or cut any hair.

It is a good idea to have a friend help you for areas in the back where you can’t see. Once all the thread is out, the wig simply comes off. In the case of taping, detach the tape one by one. Do not pull to hard or yank on it, be careful and gentle. When using glue, you will need adhesive remover which you apply on the glue or gel. That will make the wig detach very easily and you simply need to remove any excess glue from your skin and the hairpiece.

      • How Do I Care for My Hair Wig?

      • Regardless of what type of hairpiece you have, brushing it regularly is essential. Keep it tangle free and it will look amazing all the time. Be careful while combing and don’t go near the roots and the cap because you might damage it.

You need to wash it regularly, but not too often. Once a week is fine if you wear it every day. The easiest way to wash it is to remove it first and place it in a sink. Add cold water and wig shampoo (you don’t want to use hot water for washing). Avoid scrubbing too hard; just gently massage the hair as well as the cap area.

Afterwards, rinse thoroughly with cold water. Now is the time to apply some conditioner and remember to avoid the cap area. Brush gently with your fingers and rinse conditioner out. The best way to dry your wig is to place it on a stand and let it dry overnight. Avoid blow dryers as much as you can and don’t brush until it’s completely dry.

      • Can I Use Regular Hair Products on My Wig?

      • You should only use products that are made specifically for wigs. That way you can avoid any potential damage to your hairpiece and product buildup. There are great wig shampoos, conditioners, and other products available online and you will certainly find the one you like. It is also recommended that you use special brushes and combs for detangling since a wig is more fragile than your natural hair.

      • Can You Dye or Color Hair Wigs?

      • If it’s a synthetic one, then definitely not. However, if it’s made from real human hair, in most cases you can dye it. You need to check with the store if the wig has been processed and dyed before and that will also help you in deciding whether to color it or not.

Dyeing is a process that you should not do yourself, no matter how experienced with coloring you are. Go to a professional and have them inspect the wig first and then color it if it’s deemed safe. In any case, never go for a lighter color, choose a darker one. Since wig dyeing is quite complicated, it is best to choose the correct color in the first place and if you want to change your style later, purchase another hairpiece in a different color.

      • Can You Use Hot Tools on Wigs?

      • You should not use hot tools on synthetic or real hair wigs. The head might damage the strands and shorten the lifespan of the wig if used frequently. The best option is to buy a pre-styled hairpiece and have two with different styles. That way you don’t have to fear any damage and you also save a lot of time.

      • Can You Shower or Swim with Hair Wig?

      • We do not recommend that you swim or shower while wearing your wig. Chemical in the pool water can damage the delicate hairs, as well as saltwater. The strands will also get tangled and matted which is a pain to brush through afterward. When going swimming, use a cap to protect your hair and washing of the wig is best done while it’s not attached.

      • Can You Sleep with Hair Wig?

      • Depending on how you attach your wig, it might be the best that you take it off before you go to bed and place it on a holder. However, that means you must attach the wig every morning which can take up a lot of time. Sleep with a wig only if you took proper measures to protect it.

You either need to tie a scarf around your head or get your hair into a braid or a bun. If the hair is loose, it will be a nightmare in the morning to detangle but not only that, some of the hairs may fall out or break.

      • What are Cushion Bands and Wig Grippers?

      • Cushion Band

A cushion band is a type of headband that’s filled with a special gel. It is worn to make wig wearing more comfortable. It is especially useful for people who have partial or complete hair loss. When someone is losing their hair, their scalp is very sensitive and sometimes even painful, so a cushion band is used to prevent any discomfort from wearing a hairpiece.

        Wig Grippers

A wig gripper is a similar thing, but its main use is making the wig stay in place. It is made from velour or similar fabric and it essentially grips the wig and keeps it from moving or falling off. Both are great wig accessories that you might want to consider because they will certainly make your life easier.

      • Do Wigs Come Pre-styled?

      • Some wigs do indeed come pre-styled. That’s a great thing because the wig is instantly ready to wear, and you don’t have to worry about styling it yourself. However, some women choose to customize their hairpiece and make it their own. Both options work great, it all depends on your preferences.

      • Do I Need a Wig Liner?

      • If the wig doesn’t seem as comfortable or if your scalp is sensitive due to hair loss, you might need some type of wig liner. Many women prefer wearing a cap underneath the hairpiece to protect their hair and simply get it out of the way.

The most basic cap that you can find is made of a very comfortable and soft mesh material. The mesh is also very thin so you will barely feel it on your head. However, if your scalp is very sensitive, we recommend a cap made from cotton. It is slightly thicker and will protect your scalp and make the wig more comfortable to wear. Wig liners are very easy to clean, and they can protect your wig as well. There are also wig grippers which are not whole caps but headbands that make the headpiece more comfortable.

      • Can I Wear a Wig if My Head Sweats a Lot?

      • Of course, you can! That’s certainly not a problem whatsoever. The only thing you need to make sure is to wash your wig regularly because the sweat will be absorbed by the wig cap. Another thing you can do is to wear a wig liner because it will protect your hairpiece from getting sweaty and protect your scalp against irritation.

      • How Should I Store my Wig?

      • Proper storage is another important part of caring for your wig and protecting it against damage. We recommend that you purchase a wig stand along with the hairpiece because you’re certainly going to need it for storage. It is the best and easiest way to store your hair when you’re not wearing it and have it ready to go.

A stand is perfect for drying your wig as well. The only tip is to avoid Styrofoam stands because they can mess with the fit of the wig. The hair needs to be in a dry and cool place, away from sunlight.

    2. Are Wigs Only For People Suffering From Hair Loss?

    3. Many women are under the impression that hairpieces are only worn by those who are experiencing some type of hair loss or have no hair at all. This is completely untrue because today, wigs are used just as another beauty tool that helps us get a gorgeous hair makeover. That’s not to say that wigs aren’t a great way to cover up hair loss problems, but it can be used for all other purposes as well. So if this was your reason for not trying out wigs, you now know that it isn’t true.

    4. Are People Going to Know That I’m Wearing A Wig?

    5. This is one of the big questions and something that all women worry about. Everybody wants their hairpiece looking 100% realistic and that’s quite understandable. To achieve that, you need to purchase a hairpiece made out of real human hair, not synthetic, and one that has a cap made out of lace because those have the most realistic hairline. Some of the popular choices are lace front wigs, 360 frontal wigs, and full lace wigs. You can purchase all three from AiryHair at very affordable prices. All of our hairpieces look amazingly natural since they’re made out of Remy strands. But we should mention that, although you should try to make your hairpiece look as realistic as possible, wearing a wig is nothing to be ashamed about and you should wear it with pride.

    6. Can My Wig Detach?

    7. Another thing that is not talked about often and that many women fear is the hairpiece coming off, especially in public. Unfortunately, it can happen although it is very rare and happens only if the wig is not attached properly. Methods like taping or gluing, although usually very reliable, can sometimes cause the hairpiece to detach partially or fully. If you haven’t applied glue or tape correctly, it might not be able to hold the weight of the wig. But even if that happens, it’s not like the hairpiece is going to come flying off. A more realistic situation is that you’ll simply notice a bit of detachment somewhere on the hairline. If you have glue, you can salvage that pretty quickly.

    8. Are Wigs Heavy?

    9. Some of you may wonder are wigs heavy and do they put a lot of pressure on your head. That is a logical question because the hairpiece consists of a lot of hair, plus the wig cap. But the answer is no because wig caps are designed in a way so that they redistribute the weight equally all around the head and are quite comfortable. The weight of the hair feels just like your normal hair would so it’s not a big change. The only instance where you could feel some extra weight is if you get a dense and thick hairpiece with insane volume and length.

    10. How Dirty Do Wigs Get?

    11. This is also something not everybody wants to talk about, but it is worth mentioning for beginner users. If you wash the hairpiece and your natural strands regularly, everything will be nice and clean and you won’t have any negative experiences. However, if you neglect washing your wig, it can get really dirty and smelly. Hair on your wig is just like real hair and it will get dirty over time, also, your scalp can get quite sweaty and oily which makes the cap dirty as well. So although it should be obvious, yes, you do need to wash your hairpiece to keep it clean.

    12. Will My Head Get Too Hot?

    13. This depends on the type of wig you have. Cheaper wig types have a cap made out of really thick material which means your head will probably get hot, especially during the summer months. That also contributes to the hairpiece getting dirtier more quickly. However, if you want to avoid that, you should get a hairpiece with a cap at least partially made out of lace. The light mesh material allows your scalp to breathe and air can get through to cool it down.

    14. Can I Sleep With A Wig?

    15. Although you could sleep with a wig on if it’s sewn in, it is generally not recommended. Although it can be quite a hassle to take it off each night, that way you can extend the life of your new hair significantly. Tossing and turning while sleeping causes some serious tangling which might ruin the hairpiece over time. Not to mention it can put a lot of strain on your scalp. So to allow your natural strands and scalp to rest a little bit and keep your wig in a pristine condition, take it off at least every other night. Glue and tape methods are great for that because it’s easy to remove and reinstall in the morning.

    16. Should I Tell My Boyfriend About My Wig?

    17. So you have started dating this cute guy, but he still doesn’t know that your gorgeous locks are not yours and it’s a wig. Some girls are hesitant to reveal their beauty secrets and often feel embarrassed about it. In our opinion, rocking a hairpiece is nothing to be ashamed of so you should tell your boyfriend. The thing is, he’s going to find out anyway once you get a bit more intimate because he’ll be able to touch it. That’s why it’s not a good idea to start your relationship by hiding a big part of yourself. Guys love beautiful hair, but they don’t care how you got it. They are used to girls using different beauty tricks to look sexier and more attractive so it’s not a big deal for them.

    18. I Didn’t Attach My Hairpiece Properly, What Should I Do?

    19. If it’s your first time trying to put on a wig, some mistakes could happen no matter how closely you follow the tutorials. That’s why you should be as careful as possible. In case something goes wrong or you simply don’t like the final result, the best thing to do is simply remove the hairpiece and try again. It’s fine if you don’t get it right the first time because most women don’t. You need to try a couple of times to get a hang of it and find your way of doing it. In case you’re completely helpless at doing this yourself, you can always set up an appointment at a salon.

    20. What to Do If I Damage My Wig?

    21. If you damage your hairpiece due to incorrect attachment or neglect, that’s a slightly bigger problem. There is a possibility that you’ll be able to save your new hair, but that largely depends on type of damage done. For example, if you have accidentally ripped the cap, you might be able to sew it back up. If the hair itself is damaged or tangled up, you might be able to revive it by extensive treatments and a lot brushing. But sometimes, unfortunately, there is nothing to be done and in that case you simply have to purchase new hair. So it can’t be emphasized enough that you should be very careful while handling your wig to avoid all of this.

    22. What If My Hairpiece Isn’t The Right Size?

    23. So your brand new wig has finally arrived, but upon trying it out, you find out that it’s too big or too small. That can be quite disappointing and frustrating. While some stores offer returns, many do not so take extra time to choose the right size. You need to measure the circumference of your head, that way you will know exactly what size you are. Guessing it’s not a good way to do it and you’ll end up paying a lot of money for a wig that does not fit you.

    24. Will Wig Wearing Damage My Natural Strands?

    25. A myth that has been circling is that wearing hairpieces damages your natural strands. It’s interesting that some people think that because actually the opposite is true – wigs actually protect your natural strands and allow them to be restored. That’s why they’re also known as a protective style. If your natural hair is damaged in any way or poor condition, keeping it safe under a wig can be quite beneficial because it’s not exposed to any outside conditions. So to answer the question simply, no, wearing a wig will not damage your natural strands in any way.

    26. Can I Wear A Wig If I Have A Sensitive Scalp?

    27. Many girls suffer from a sensitive scalp, especially those who suffer from hair loss. So, you might wonder if wearing a wig with a sensitive scalp is painful? The answer is yes, but you do need to takes some precautions. We recommend using a full lace wig because it’s made out of a very comfortable and soft mesh material. Also, make sure to wear a wig cap to keep your scalp safe.

    28. What If I Want To Stop Wearing My Hairpiece?

    29. Many people think that once you start wearing a wig, you have to do so forever and there’s no going back. That’s not true and you can stop wearing it whenever you want to. Although wigs are great, you might get bored with them or simply want to take a break (which is a good thing to do now and again). It might be a bit unusual to go back to your natural hair because you got used to long, gorgeous locks, but that feeling goes away pretty quickly. Remember that although hairpieces are flawless, your natural strands are beautiful as well.

    30. Is It Strange to Wear Other People’s Hair?

    31. If you opt for a Remy hairpiece, which is what most women usually do, the fact is that you’re going to be wearing someone else’s hair on your head. Hair is collected from real people who are known as donors, and after the strands have been processed they are sewn on caps to make a wig. Although the notion that you’re wearing hair from other people might sound weird to some, it’s not so unusual. At the end of the day, it’s just hair and all of us have it.

    32. Is It True That Remy Wigs Are Very Expensive?

    33. This is a common myth when it comes to hairpieces, so the answer is – no, Remy wigs are not as expensive as you might think. It is possible to buy a high-quality hairpiece made out of real human hair from $50 – $120, depending on the type. That’s not a lot of money if you consider what you get for it.
