After you have decided to buy a wig, you may feel overwhelmed by all the different choices and are not sure which one to buy. You have to choose a wig type, hair type, density, texture, length, and measure your head in order to buy the right size. All of that can seem a bit complicated and that’s why we have compiled an easy-to-follow wig buying guide that will help you through the whole process. We have also included some styling and maintenance tips that will help you care for your new wig. So let’s get started!

Different Wig Types

The first thing you need to decide when buying a wig is a wig type. There are three most popular ones that you might have already heard about; a full lace wig, 360 frontal wig, and a lace front wig, and all of them give amazing results. You should pick according to your needs and wishes so we’re going to explain how each one works.

- Full Lace Wig

A full lace wig is one of the best wigs you can buy because it is the most versatile. The reason why it is called a “full lace” is because the whole cap is made only out of lace. All of the hairs are manually sewn into the lace and that’s what makes it the most expensive one out of the three. But you get the option to part your strands anyway you want to; anywhere on the sides or in the middle. You also get infinite style options, like braiding your hair or wearing it in a high ponytail. All of that is because there is lace all over so however you decide to style your wig, it will look completely natural and imitate a real hairline and scalp. The only disadvantage of a full lace wig is that you don’t have the option to add additional bundles of hair because all of the strands are already sewn into the lace, one by one.

- 360 Frontal Wig

This is another versatile wig type that looks incredibly real. The reason for that is the lace that goes around your head. On the crown area, there is a regular wig cap which means you can add more bundles of hair in that area. That way, you can control the density of the wig, making it even fuller if you prefer to. You can part your strands wherever the lace is and you can also wear them in a high ponytail because there is lace all around the hairline. This is a slightly cheaper option, but works incredibly well.

- Lace Front Wig

This is the most affordable wig type out of the three because it has lace only at the front. That means you get a strip of lace going from one temple to the other and the rest of the wig cap is made from a thicker material that has wefts of hair sewn onto it. You can also add some more strands onto it if you want even more volume. Because there is lace only at the front, high ponytails are not recommended because you won’t get such a natural look. You also have less parting options. Nevertheless, this is still an amazing will that will look amazing and is very easy to install. It is great for beginners or chemotherapy patients who plan on wearing a wig on a temporary basis.

- Hair Extensions

Obviously, hair extensions are not wigs but we thought that it would be fair to include them there too, especially if you have ability or prefer them over the wigs. We also wrote a full on extensions guide, which you might want to check out.

Wig Density Difference

Real Human Hair Wigs by AiryHair
When you have decided on a wig type, you need to think about wig density. Are you’re going for a very full look, or are you fine with natural density? With full lace wigs, the density is predetermined and you have to choose it when purchasing. These wigs are the most real looking ones and usually have normal density. 360 frontal and lace front wigs are better for girls who want more density and volume because you have the option to add as many bundles as you can fit onto the wig. But you will mostly see the density represented by a certain percentage. We will explain each one so that you can choose what works best for you.

- 90% density - This is the lowest density wig that you can buy. The strands are very thin and there is barely volume. AiryHair does not sell any 90% density wigs because they’re simply not up to our standards and we don’t recommend that you use it because you won’t get good results. Although it is cheap, it is really not worth it.

- 100% to 110% density - This is another option that is not available from the AiryHair store. The reason for that is the low density of the strands. You will not get a lot of hair on the cap and there’s very little volume. This type of density is only recommended for people who have naturally very thin and fine hair and want to mimic that with their wig. Otherwise, we recommend that you go for higher density.

- 120% to 130% density - This is the most common wig density that you’ll find at most places. AiryHair wigs have a 130% default density which is considered to be the density of normal human hair. This wig will look completely real and natural because it mimics your own locks. If you’re not looking for over the top volume and what something to wear every day, this wig density is a great choice.

- 150% density - This is a good density choice for all women who like that extra volume that still looks natural. You will get a bit of a density boost and the wig will look as slightly thicker hair. It is a bit more expensive than the default density wig, but that extra thickness really makes a difference.

- 180% density - For girls who want to look extra glamorous and love long and voluminous locks. This type of wig will give you incredible fullness and thickness that is instantly noticeable. Although the wig looks completely realistic, its density is much higher than that of normal hair. You will love all the amazing hairstyle you can make with this much hair and feel really special while wearing a 180% density wig.

- 200% density - Extra dense wigs are for real divas out there who want to feel like a celebrity or a pop star. If you dream about mermaid-like tresses, then this is the right wig density for you. You will definitely get noticed and be in the center of attention wherever you go. This is the most expensive option out of all others, but it is definitely worth it for the incredible amount of hair that you get.

Wig Hair Type

Another decision you have to make when buying a wig is hair type. There are synthetic wigs and human hair wigs, the latter being more expensive. Although synthetic wigs today look pretty good and very realistic, they are not that versatile. For example, you cannot straighten or curl most synthetic wigs. They also have a shorter lifespan because they tend to tangle a lot more. But the great thing about them is that they’re very affordable and that’s why they’re recommended for cancer patient who have lost their hair. Since their hair will grow back eventually, they only need a wig for a short period of time and that’s why it makes sense not to spend a huge amount of money on the most expensive human hair wig. However, for the more demanding customers who want that real feel, synthetic hair can never be a true match for a human hair one. Wigs made out of human hair can be curled, straightened, and last for a very long time. Not to mention they are completely indistinguishable from real strands.

Wig Texture

You also have the option to choose different textures when buying a wig. This decision should be based on whether you want to imitate your natural tresses or you want a big style transformation. Most wigs come in straight, wavy, and curly textures. Oftentimes, you can choose the exact type of curls that you want like kinky or deep curls. Definitely choose a texture that compliments your face and looks natural. If you buy human hair wig, you have the option to change the texture every once in a while.

- Wig Length Notes

Just list with extensions, the wig length is measured when the hair is straight, so if you are buying 20 inch straight wig, the body weave texture will look closer to that of 18 inch while curly is closer to 16 inch.

What Length Wig Should You Buy?

What Length Wig Should You Buy?
Wigs come in many different lengths, from very short to extra-long. The length you’re going to choose depends on your taste and preferences. Some girls are into short pixie cuts while others enjoy long, lustrous locks. Before you go and pick the longest wig available, keep in mind that it will also be the most expensive one. The more hair you get, the more it will cost. Especially if this is your first wig, we recommend a normal 16 to 20 inch length that’s not over the top. You first want to get used to the feel of the wig and see if it’s the right choice for you.

Cap Type

We have mentioned a little bit about caps when we talked about the different wig types. With those three, it’s all about the lace to regular cap ratio. A full lace wig has a cap that’s made only out of lace, a 360 wig has lace all around except for the crown area, while the lace frontal has lace only at the front, as the name implies. There are also what’s called monofilament caps and they are basically the same as lace front caps. There is also a traditional cap that usually contains no lace which means it doesn’t imitate a natural hairline and partings as good as other cap types.

How to Measure Head Size for Wigs?

When buying a wig, ordering the right size is crucial. You need to carefully measure your head and select the proper size because otherwise your wig will either be too loose or too tight. Every wig should fit your head snugly. You need to measure the circumference of your head, starting from the hairline at your forehead and going all the way around. It is also a good idea to measure your head front to back. So take a tape measure, place the beginning on your forehead, right at the hairline and the end at the nape of your neck. Write both measurements down. When purchasing your wig, make sure that your measurements match the wig that you’re buying. For most wigs, you don’t have the option to customize them once you buy them. Only with the 360 lace wig, you can make it smaller by cutting it and re-sewing. That’s why we recommend that you take correct measurements and buy accordingly.

Wig Styling

When styling your new wig, you want to make it look as real and natural as possible. First of all, make sure that you have installed it correctly. It doesn’t matter which technique and method you use, you want the hairline to look as neat as possible and everything to be completely fitted and symmetrical. If you bought human hair wig, you can pretty much do anything to it. You can try out wavy, curly, as well as straight hairstyles. When it comes to hairdos, you can do pretty much anything with a wig, the only problem can be updos and high ponytails. If you want your hair up, you can only do it if you have a full lace wig or a 360 lace wig. Only those two wig types have a completely natural hairline all around. With a full lace wig, you can even braid your whole hair.

Wig Application Methods

You are probably wondering how to actually install the wig once you buy it. Well, there are a couple of wig application methods that you can try. The most common ones are sewing, taping, and gluing and each one of them has its pros and cons. When sewing, a thread and needle is used to sew the wig onto the hairline. If you go for glue, it is applied around the hairline and the wig is secured on top of it. Or you can use a double sided tape that will hold the wig in place. Apart from all those, almost every wig has a couple of combs or clips that also help to attach the wig and hold it firmly. Let’s go through the easiest way of applying your new wig.

1. Before you actually start the application process, try on your wig to make sure it fits right. It should be snug on your head, not too tight and not too loose. If you have a wig that has extra lace in the front, you will need to cut it. So position your wig right and cut the lace around your hairline.

2. Another thing you can do to make the wig even more realistic looking is plucking some hairs from the hairline. Most wigs have equal density all around and that can sometimes look less realistic on the actual hairline because natural strands are not as dense in that area. Use tweezers to pluck a couple of hairs, but don’t overdo it.

3. You have the option of wearing a wig cap underneath your new locks or making simple cornrows.

4. After you’re done with all the preparation, you can proceed with the actual attachment of the wig. First see if your wig has any clips and attach those first to your head. Double check that everything is symmetrical and placed correctly.

5. Now you need to decide whether you want to sew the wig on, glue it, or tape it. If you go with sewing, you will need a needle and a thread. Start sewing on the front of your hairline and go all the way around. You can also add a couple of stitches at the crown area. If you decide to glue it on, there are great gels that you can buy, made specifically for this which means they’re completely safe. Apply some glue/gel just below your natural hairline and wait a few moments until it becomes tacky. Grab the wig with your fingers and press it there. It is easier if you do this one bit at a time. To finish, blow dry that area so that it sets quicker. Using a double tape is very similar, apply it around your hairline and tape the wig on. Make sure that everything is nice and tight.

6. That’s pretty much it! The wig should look very realistic and natural if applied correctly and should stay on for a long period of time. It will behave just like your natural hair. You can also ask a friend to help you if it’s your first time or go to a salon to have it done professionally.

How to Wash and Dry a Wig?

Just like you have to care for your own tresses, you need to take some steps in order to maintain your wig as well. The more you take care of it, the longer it will last you. Whether you have a synthetic or human hair wig, the washing process is quite similar. Keep in mind that you don’t need to wash your wig as often as you natural strands. In fact, washing it too often could wear it down over time. Also, don’t use too many products on your wig because that leads to washing it more often.

1. First, you need to take off your wig and brush it with a comb.

2. Fill up your sink with lukewarm water and add some shampoo in it. Stir slightly.

3. Now is the time to submerge your wig into the water. Gently massage and squeeze it while avoiding any harsh scrubbing. Get the shampoo all over the strands, as well as the lace and the cap.

4. You can leave your wig to sit for a couple of minutes, before rinsing out.

5. Refill your sing with warm water and this time, add some conditioner. Submerge the wig and let it sit for at least ten minutes. You want the conditioner to have time to work its magic.

6. Rinse again and towel dry the wig. Place it on a dry towel and let it dry completely. You can also place it on a wig stand to dry, but only if the wig is straight. Curls could get ruined if you use this method.

7. After the wig is completely dry, use a comb to thoroughly brush it and it’s ready to be worn again!
