General Wig Information for Beginners

Here you can get familiar with basic wig terms and beginner’s questions.

- Why do people wear wigs?

There are a couple of different reasons why one might decide to start wearing a wig. The first is medical issues that result in partial or full hair loss. That can happen due to chemotherapy, alopecia, trichotillomania, hypothyroidism, anemia, telogen effluvium, autoimmune diseases, stress, hormones, protein deficiency etc. If you notice that your hair is getting thinner or falling out, you should definitely go see a doctor to determine what is causing it and get appropriate treatment. During the treatment you might want to opt for wearing a hairpiece until your natural strands recover fully. Losing hair is very unfortunate and can be hard on women and men who often lose their confidence along with their precious locks. That’s why wearing a hairpiece, even temporarily, can make a huge difference. Another reason why people might want to buy a wig is to simply change their look. A hairpiece allows you to completely transform your hairstyle instantly, without cutting or dyeing your natural strands. Although you can achieve a similar thing with extensions, a wig doesn’t require you to have long hair; you can have extremely short locks and still get that long style.

- How do wigs work?

During the last couple of years, there was a big progress in the wig industry. Modern ones look completely real and are available to many different customers. The main thing about them is that it doesn’t matter how much natural strands you have or what their length is, literally everyone can wear a wig if they choose to. Every hairpiece has a cap with hair sewn onto it either by a machine or by hand. That way, you get a full head of hair of your preference. Depending on the wig type, there can also be lace parts on the cap. You simply need to attach the wig and you’re all set. It’s actually pretty simple and straightforward.

- Does a wig look natural?

If you have never worn a wig, you might be worried about how natural they actually look. You may remember wigs from many years ago that didn’t really look realistic, but you can rest assured that they have come a long way. Modern ones, of good quality, are completely indistinguishable from your real locks. If the fit is right, no one will ever suspect that it’s not your real hair. Quality wigs have a realistic hairline and are made from real hair so that it looks just like the real thing. Many celebrities are wearing wigs and you usually do not even notice it. That’s why you should have no fear of it looking fake or unnatural.

- How long does a wig last?

The longevity depends on the type of hairpiece and the hair on it. Most of the time, synthetic ones last for about one year, while human hair ones last for three years or more. Another thing that influences the lifespan is how good the wig is taken care of. If you follow all the maintenance instructions, you can add a few extra months of life. It also depends on whether you wear it every single day and whether you have multiple ones that you change up. If you want a hairpiece that you can wear for a really long period of time, you should definitely go for quality and real human hair. However, if you need it only temporarily, for a couple of months, synthetic ones will also do the job.

Wig Shopping Tips

In this section, you can find out everything you need to know about the process of buying the wig.

- How do I buy a wig online?

The first step of buying a wig is knowing your preferences, needs, and what kind of result you are expecting. Here are a couple of questions that you can ask yourself to determine that. What is the reason I’m buying a wig? How long am I planning to wear it? What kind of look and style am I going for? Keep those answers in mind when choosing a wig later on. If you are suffering from hair loss or are about to go through chemotherapy, it is crucial to plan in advance. It is a great idea to purchase before you lose all of your hair because that will certainly be a lot less traumatic. You can also cut a small strand of your hair so you can match it better later. The size of your head needs to be determined, then you should think about wig and cap types, choosing the right color and style.

- How do I know my wig size?

The first step is measuring your head. You will need a tape measure to do that. Place one end on your forehead and go all around the head, following your hairline. Write the measurement down. Place the one end on your forehead again, but this time go to the back of your head, at the nape of your neck. Write it down as well. These are the main two measurements that you’ll need in order to determine the right size. Wigs come usually come in small, medium, and large sizes. Most women have an average sized head so medium will fit them great, however, some might require smaller or larger sizes. Each shop will have their sizes along with the approximate measurements for each one. You simply need to take a look it and compare it to your measurements. Usually, ultra small cap fits heads that are under 20 inches, small is for 21 inch heads, medium or average size is about 21.5 – 22.5 inches, and a large cap fits heads larger than 22.5 inches. Keep in mind that you should not rush through this process because your new hair needs to fit you exactly right and many stores do not offer refunds.

- Choosing a wig cap

A traditional wig cap is made out of fabric and has hair sewn onto it by a machine. The bundles of hair a slightly teased on the roots in order to hide the cap better. If you purchase a quality hairpiece with a traditional cap, it will look great and realistic. There are also monofilament cap types are made out of a lace mesh material and hairs are sewn by hand. This type of caps are usually on full lace wig types. These, of course, are more comfortable to wear and look even more natural. However, there are caps that are a mixture of the two. For example, a 360 wig has a cap with lace going all around the head, a frontal one has the mesh material only at the front.

- How do I select a wig color?

Wigs come in hundreds of different colors so there are many shades to choose from. You first need to decide whether you want to imitate your natural hair color or go for a completely new style. If you want an exact match of your real strands, you need to be very careful with color selection. Although pictures of color swatches you see in online stores offer a fair representation of the shades, sometimes the color can look slightly different in real life. For that reason, it is recommended that you first order a color swatch from the store you’re buying from and see how the shades actually look. Now you can compare them to your natural strands and make the best match.

- Choosing a texture

Another way to customize your hairpiece and make it fit you perfectly is by choosing a nice texture. Wigs come in so many different textures including straight, wavy, body wave, deep curl, kinky curly, funmi, and many others. Some are even pre-styled so you get a wig that’s literally ready to wear. Here you have the option to choose a texture that’s most similar to your real strands, but if you’re looking to change your style using a wig, go for something new and different. Some women also prefer two have two or more wigs in each texture so that they can change it up whenever they want to.

- What does the density of a wig mean?

Density means how much hair there is on a cap. It determines the thickness and overall volume of the hair. If the density is very low, you will get thin and fine hair and if it’s higher, you will get more thickness. You need to determine what kind of look you’re going for in order to select the right density percentage. 90% is the lowest density that you can get and it is not really recommended, just like 100 – 110% density. 130% density is a great option because it is very similar to real hair. 150% density will give you a bit of extra volume, but nothing too over the top. 180% and 200% density means big volume and thickness, great for special occasions.

- What is 130% wig density?

This is the default wig density you can buy at AiryHair. We do not have wigs that have density less than 130% because we believe those are not up to our standards because of very thin hair. 130% is considered to be the density of regular human hair which means you will get a very natural look if you go with this percentage. It is perfect for anyone who wants their hairpiece to look completely real and just like natural strands. You won’t get wild, over the top volume, but most customers are usually not looking for that, especially if you suffer from hair loss. Densities between 130% and 200% are more suitable for girls who have naturally very thick hair or want a glamorous look with lots of volume. As with other options, you first need to determine what are you needs and then choose and shop accordingly.

- What is high density hair?

High density hair means it is over 130% dense. If you’re looking for a lot of volume and really thick strands, you should definitely go above the default density. High density hair is recommended for girls who have naturally very thick hair or simply want to have a very fancy and extravagant look. The highest density hair that you can get is about 200%. That is almost double the regular, default density which means you get A LOT of hair. If you want to look like a real diva with amazingly voluminous locks, then try a higher density hair, you will definitely notice the difference. Should I buy more than one hairpiece?

To begin, start with one wig and see how it fits you and whether you would like to continue to wear it for longer. But if your budget allows you, it is a good idea to have at least two wigs. There are a couple of reasons for that. First of all, your hair will last you a lot longer if you don’t wear it every single day. So having two wigs that you can change every once in a while is definitely useful if you want to get as much out of them. Another reason why having two is better is washing and drying. While you’re cleaning one, you can wear the other. A cool thing that you can do with two wigs that’s a real time saver is having one curly and the other straight. That way you can change up your style as often as you want, without having to constantly curl and straighten your hair. But if you’re on a tight budget, one will do the trick as well.

- Why did I find cheaper wigs elsewhere?

Some of the wigs you find elsewhere might be cheaper, but there is a good reason for that. If the price is lower than average, the hair will certainly not be high quality, the cap won’t be as sturdy and comfortable, the density will be very low, and it will definitely not look good or last as long. The saying “You get what you pay for” really rings true when it comes to wigs. You cannot expect to buy a high quality wig for a very cheap price. So the reason why you might find that AiryHair wigs are not as cheap as other ones you find is the quality. We do not sell low quality products because they simply do not meet our standards. For example, our default hair density is 130% and we do not sell anything that’s lower. Cheap hair has a very short lifespan which means you would have to buy a new one very quickly. When you do the math, it’s actually more affordable to buy one, more expensive, high-quality hairpiece that will last you for a very long time, than several cheap ones.

- Will insurance pay for my wig?

Most insurance companies will pay for your wig, at least partially. However, the right term you need to use when speaking to your insurance is cranial prosthesis. First, ask your doctor to write you a prescription for it, including the ICD-9 code. Then you need to contact your insurance and ask them about their policy regarding cranial prosthesis. Although stores will not accept any payments directly from your insurance, they can provide you with a receipt that you can use to get reimbursed by your insurance company. If they require any additional information, most stores will provide that, including AiryHair. Can my hair be used to make a wig for my loved one?

If someone you know is battling an illness and is in a need of a hairpiece, maybe you have considered donating your own hair. While that is very generous, it is not as easy to do so. First of all, hair from one donor is not enough to make a full wig so your strands would be mixed with ones from other donors as well. Custom made wigs are also very expensive and take a lot of time to make. If your loved one is suffering from a disease that’s making them lose hair rapidly, they don’t have that much time to waste and probably want their hairpiece as soon as possible. Also, human hair is not really recommended for cancer patients and other people will serious illness because it’s hard for them to maintain it properly while being treated. Synthetic hair is a much better option because it can still look great, but doesn’t require much maintenance.

- What are your wig shopping tips?

Regardless of which store you decide to buy from, even if it’s not AiryHair, you need to make sure that you’re dealing with a company that you can trust. Check that the store has a long history with selling hair and has a good range of quality products. Make sure that there is an address and a phone number through which you can contact the company. Beware of very low prices because there is often a very good reason why a store offers such cheap products. They are usually not made very well, using low quality hair and will not last very long. Some stores even try to sell you hair that has already been used or has some kind of defect. Also beware of false branded wigs. Some online stores try to sell very cheap and badly made wigs under famous brands so they charge a lot of money on it. We at AiryHair offer only quality products that withstand the test of time. The prices of our products are affordable and similar to those of other established stores. You simply need to follow your common sense and make sure to do some research before you buy anything.

- Where can I get a free wig?

In cases where your budget simply does not allow you to afford a hairpiece, there are some free options. If you live in the United States, you can try contacting the American Cancer Society or try to look for a similar organization in your country. They will provide you with a free wig if you are a cancer patient. But do keep in mind that those are very cheap and low quality since they’re free. These wigs unfortunately won’t be very comfortable and look as good. What you can do to make it look better is going to a hair professional to style it.

Questions About Wig Types

Hair Wigs: Frequently Asked Questions
Now that you understand some basic tips for wig buying, it is time to move onto the wig types and get into more detail. The three main types you’ll find is full lace, 360 frontal, and lace frontal. We’ll go into each one and explain all the pros and cons. This information will help you decide on a certain type and see what else is out there.

- What is a full lace wig?

Full lace is one of the most expensive wigs you can buy, but there are very good reasons for it. As you can guess by the name, it has lace all around. So the whole cap is made out of light mesh material which is far superior to traditional caps. The hair is not sewn on by a machine, but rather each hair is attached by hand. Because of this meticulous and time consuming process, the price goes up in comparison to other types. The reason why having the whole cap made out of lace is better than anything else is the natural and seamless look you get. Your hairline will look absolutely real and perfect and you can also part your hair any way you want to. You can ever have cornrows because the lace ensures a realistic parting everywhere. Wearing a high ponytail or different updos is also not a problem with a full lace wig so you have countless style options. Since the lace is very thin, a full lace is so comfortable to wear, it will feel just like your natural hair. We recommend that you select this type if you want the most natural look possible. This hairpiece will mimic your natural strands perfectly no one will ever dream that you’re actually wearing a wig. Although it is more expensive than other types, the look and feel of this wig is simply not comparable to cheaper varieties. A full lace is perfect for our most demanding customers who only want the absolute best. The only downside to a full lace is that you do not have the option to sew in any additional bundles on the cap in order to make it fuller.

- What is a 360 frontal wig?

This is a slightly cheaper option than the full lace, but still a great choice. It consists out of a cap on the crown area of the head and mesh material going all around the hairline. This is a very clever design because you still get the lace material where it matters the most – your hairline, but the cost of making it is cheaper because there’s also a cap in the middle. The lace has individual hairs sewn by hand and it imitates a natural hairline, making it indistinguishable from real strands growing out of your scalp. This type of wig is immensely versatile because you have the option to try out all kinds of different styles, including high ponytails and updos. The 360 lace also allows you to part your strands in many different ways, like in the middle or on the sides. We recommend a 360 wig if you’re looking for something relatively affordable and realistic looking. You will simply be amazed how a 360 frontal completely transforms your style while looking absolutely seamless. This type of hairpiece will definitely satisfy even some of our most demanding customers.

- What is a lace front wig?

The name is pretty self-explanatory, it is a wig type that has lace only at the front, unlike a full lace one. It is constructed in a way that you get a normal cap and mesh material at the front, usually going from one temple to the other. The hair on the cap is sewn by a machine and the hair on the lace is hand sewn. Because of that type of construction, it is the cheapest out of the three. The lace is strategically positioned in the front so that you can still have a natural looking hairline at the front, where it matters the most. However, the hairline at the back will not be as natural so we don’t recommend wearing high ponytails. You also have less options when it comes to parting your hair. But if you’re not so hung up that, a lace front will do the job, it is still considered to be a high quality hairpiece. Many women like having a regular cap along with the lace because it feels more secure and sturdy. Another advantage of having a cap and not only lace is that you can add more bundles to your wig. You do that by buying some bundles that are the same as the hair on the wig and you simply sew it onto the cap. It is actually very simple and you can do it yourself. But if you don’t plan on adding additional bundles yourself, but still want a full look, go for a higher density lace front wig.

- Which wigs have the most natural look?

Now that you understand the basic wig types, full lace, lace front, and 360 frontal, we can discuss which one is the most natural looking. First of all, all of them look very realistic, you just need to follow the style and parting guidelines for each one. That being said, a full lace wig is definitely the most natural looking. As it has been explained in the previous questions, the reason for that is the lace material that the whole cap is made out of. Since every hair is individually sewn in, it creates a perfect illusion of hair growing out of the scalp. The only thing that is above it is a silk top which uses a combination of lace and a silk layer on top of it. A 360 wig is also very realistic and it will create a perfect hairline all around the head. You can also make a lace frontal look very seamless and nice, you just shouldn’t wear your hair up, stick to just pushing it back from your face. Another thing to think about when choosing the most natural looking hairpiece is the hair it is made of. Although high quality synthetic hair can look pretty good and very real, human hair will always look a bit better. It is simply hard to perfectly imitate real hair using synthetic fibers. So if a natural look is on the top of your list of priorities, definitely go for a wig made out of real human hair, but if you’re opt out for synthetic, at least make sure it is of good quality. For tips on how to make a wig look better and more natural, take a look at the next question.

- How to make a wig look more realistic?

Regardless of which type of wig you choose, you can always use some cool tricks to make it look more natural. The first thing you can do is to ask your hair professional to style your hairpiece or even cut it so that it complements the shape of your face perfectly. The color is another important aspect if you want a seamless look. For example, if you have a very pale complexion, a black wig will definitely look very strange. Choose a color that’s similar to your natural strands or a shade that suits your skin tone. Another cool trick that most wig wearers do is plucking some hairs from the wig hairline. The thing is that most wigs are equally thick all around which is not really the case with real strands because they’re usually slightly thinner around the hairline. By plucking a couple of hairs above your forehead, you create a perfect illusion. The final trick that we’d like to share with you is leaving your baby hair out so that it is visible right where the wig starts. This also creates a seamless look for your hairline.

- How do I decide between human hair vs. synthetic hair?

When deciding between human and synthetic hair, you need to consider your needs as well as look as some pros and cons of each one. Synthetic hair is made out of artificial fibers that try to mimic real hair. But what you’ll often find is that they simply do not look as realistic. You can recognize synthetic hair by the unnatural shine it has. That’s why many people use powder to reduce it. Longevity is very short with synthetic fibers and you will very soon need to buy a new hairpiece. If your synthetic hair is not heat friendly, you will not be able to change your style by curling or straightening your strands. Coloring is also not possible so you have to stick with the color you buy. However, there are some pros to synthetic strands. They are very low maintenance and that is one of the main reasons why they’re recommended to patients in treatment. Caring for a human hair wig might simply be too much for someone who is ill and not feeling too well. The main pro is, of course, the cost. Synthetic hair is much cheaper which is great for people on a tight budget. However, human hair wigs look flawless and natural and simply cannot be compared to synthetic ones. If you’re going for a natural look, human hair is the way to go. You can style it, color it, and choose from different textures. This type of hair will last you for a long time and you won’t have to worry about replacing it all the time. Once you purchase it, you can enjoy months and months of wearing your hairpiece. The only cons of real human hair is that it requires some maintenance and is more expensive. Determine what your needs are, as well as your budget, and if you do decide to go for synthetic hair, at least make sure it’s high quality.

- What are the types of wig construction?

To better understand wig types, it is useful to know how they are constructed. We’re going to start by explaining what classic or standard caps are. Here, the wefts of hair are sewn by a machine to create a wig. There is no lace or mesh material on these caps. Since the hair is sewn in wefts, that basically creates rows of hair on the cap. How much of an opening there is between these wefts also determines the type of a standard cap. This is where the word “capless” comes in. It might be slightly confusing because we’re talking about a wig cap that is also known as a capless cap. If the opening is up to 75% that means it is a capless wig. If it’s 90% or more open, it is called a full capless. There is also 100% capless, which is self-explanatory. The more open space you get, the more comfortable a hairpiece is because more air can go through it. All of these standard or classic caps are usually the cheapest option out there, however they are not as realistic as some other types like monofilament. Monofilament caps are a general term for wigs that are constructed using a mesh lace fabric. Each hair is hand sewn on the lace. Monofilament varieties include full lace wigs (constructed only out of sheer lace), 360 (lace going all around the hairline), lace frontal wigs (lace only at the front), monofilament part (only a small section of lace at the parting), monofilament crown (lace material only on the crown area), and monofilament top (sheer lace on the top of the wig). Except for a full lace wig, all other types usually have a classic cap construction on parts without lace. The most advanced hairpiece construction is a silk top. For more information about it, take a look at the section below.

- What is a silk top on a wig?

Although lace wigs are one of the best you can buy, a silk top is on the top of the list. This is definitely the most realistic look you can get, but it is also the most expensive one out of all we have mentioned previously. Hair is tied onto a lace cap using a knot and while it looks very realistic, if you take a very close look at a lace wig, you might notice these knots. With a silk top, you get a layer of silk on top of the lace. What that does is conceal the knots below the silk so the only thing you see is individual hairs that look like they’re actually growing out of the hairpiece. The silky material is usually only at the top, where you would part your hair. This is the most seamless look that you can get and a silk top wig will look absolutely flawless. You don’t have to worry about the knots being visible, or using different trick to conceal them. If you are a perfectionist and have a big budget, then definitely make sure to try out a silk top.

- What are medical wigs?

The term medical wigs refers to wigs that are suitable for cancer patients and other people with moderate or severe hair loss. If you have lost most or all of your hair, you need to be very careful what hairpiece type you’ll choose. There are two main reasons for that, first is that your scalp is probably really sensitive and the other is that you will need a very realistic hairpiece to hide your severe hair loss. Although the experience of losing hair is very traumatic and unfortunate, there are wigs that can make your life easier. You should stay away from standard caps and go with monofilament ones. If can afford it, the best choice would be a full lace wig that has been 100% hand tied. The lace material is very soft and light which is perfect for a sensitive scalp. It will feel very comfortable and cozy. A full lace wig is also one of the most natural looking ones so it will look like real hair is growing out of your scalp. Isn’t that amazing?

- Which wigs are best for sensitive scalps?

As it has been mentioned in the previous question, any monofilament wig is good for a sensitive scalp. The best one is definitely a hairpiece that’s made only out of lace, but 360 and lace front are also acceptable. A general rule is the more lace, the better. A full lace wig is extremely lightweight and the material is exceptionally soft and will not harm your scalp. However, if you want to be extra cautious, you can also wear a comfortable wig cap underneath for more protection. Just remember to avoid capless and standard caps because they’re much heavier, less comfortable, and the thick fabric might irritate the skin even more.

- Do I need a full wig if I have thinning hair or partial hair loss?

If you don’t suffer from severe hair loss, you have the option of purchasing a hair topper. It will cover the areas where your hair is thinner and create a complete look. A hair topper can blend nicely with your natural strands and look very seamless. However, if the hair loss is getting worse, a hairpiece might be a better option. Make sure that your doctor determines the cause of hair loss and an appropriate treatment.

- What other hairpiece options are available?

Apart from wigs, there are a couple of other hairpieces that might interest you. As it was mentioned before, a hair topper is one of them. You can also get a fringe which will create cool bangs. That way you don’t have to cut your natural strands and you can take it off whenever you want to. Extensions are another popular option. It is a great way to change your style, add some extra length and make your locks look fuller and thicker. Clip-in extensions are very popular because they’re not permanent and you don’t have to wear them all the time. Many women use clip-in extensions only for special occasions and nights out. However, if you want something more permanent, you may want to consider tape-in extensions, micro link, or fusion extensions. With so many different extensions types, you can definitely find something that suits you and your needs. Buns and ponytails offer you the ability to add some extra volume. They are perfect if you have very thin hair and want to give it a boost.

Wig Application Questions

- Are wigs safe to wear?

Before we get into different application methods, you are probably wondering how safe are wigs to wear? Because of the incredible improvements in hairpiece construction, modern quality wigs are 100% safe to wear. Not only are they completely harmless to your strands and scalp, they can actually protect your natural locks. If you have problems with hair thinning or loss, wearing a hairpiece can let your real hair to heal and grow again. All of the application methods are very safe so you should really have no worries whatsoever.

- How many application methods are there?

There are a number of application methods that you can choose from and all of them are pretty simple. If you have a hairpiece with a standard cap, it usually has a comb or a clip that you can use for attachment. These type of caps can also be sewn in. to do that, you need to make regular cornrows before applying your new hair. Then, when the wig is in place, you start sewing above your forehead and continue all around the hairline. For extra security, sew along the cornrows. You should use this method if you plan on wearing your wig for a longer period of time without taking it off. It is a more permanent method and you can rest assured that your hair is nothing going anywhere. If you are using monofilament caps with lace parts, apart from sewing, you also have the option to tape or glue it. For taping, you would use a double-sided tape which you can buy at many stores. The small strips of tape are placed on the top of the forehead, on the hairline. Then the lace part of the wig is attached to it. If there is lace all around, you can do the same on the sides and back of the hairline. The tape is really strong and holds the hairpiece perfectly, while being super easy to use. A similar method is gluing where you use wig glue or gel for attachment. It needs to be applied on your hairline and after it becomes tacky, the lace is pressed onto it. Using a blow dryer will help to dry the glue and make it set faster. Both tape and glue methods are great if you want to be able to reattach the wig very quickly.

- What is the best application method?

It’s hard to say because it depends on your needs and preference. Sewing might be a good option if you want something more permanent. It will give you security and the ability to wear your wig for a long time. However, if you want to take off your hairpiece often or replace it, sewing might not be the best choice. Taping or gluing or much better for that. For example, you simply need to detach the tapes and your wig is off. In terms of security, all of these methods are very good. You don’t have to worry about the wig being loose or falling out.

- Can I apply the hairpiece myself?

You can absolutely do that and it’s actually quite simple. Regardless of which method you choose, you can find instructions online and do it in no time. It really doesn’t take any special skill or tools. If you’re not feeling so confident about it, you can have it done professionally but that takes money and time set up the appointments. We recommend that you learn at least one of these methods so you can be completely independent and do it yourself. You will have a better control of your wig and be able to fix it if something goes wrong.

- How to safely remove a wig?

This depends on which method you choose, but removing is even easier than attaching it. If the hairpiece is sewn in, you need to find all the stitches and cut the thread. Be very careful when doing it because you don’t want to damage the wig or cut any hair. It is a good idea to have a friend help you for areas in the back where you can’t see. Once all the thread is out, the wig simply comes off. In the case of taping, detach the tape one by one. Do not pull to hard or yank on it, be careful and gentle. When using glue, you will need some kind of adhesive remover which you apply on the glue or gel. That will make the wig detach very easily and you simply need to remove any excess glue from your skin and the hairpiece.

Questions About Wig Care

Taking care of your hairpiece is one of the most important things you need to do in order for it to last a long time and look flawless. There is no point in spending a lot of money on a perfect wig and then neglecting it. Just like your own hair, a wig needs proper washing, styling, and care.

- How do I care for my wig?

Regardless of what type of hairpiece you have, brushing it regularly is essential. Keep it tangle free and it will look amazing all the time. However, be careful while combing and don’t go near the roots and the cap because you might damage it. You need to wash it regularly, but not too often. Once a week is fine if you wear it every day. The easiest way to wash it is to remove it first and place it in a sink. Add cold water and wig shampoo (you don’t want to use hot water for washing). Avoid scrubbing too hard; just gently massage the hair as well as the cap area. When you’re done, rinse thoroughly with cold water. Now is the time to apply some conditioner and remember to avoid the cap area. Brush gently with your fingers and rinse out when you’re done. The best way to dry your wig is to place it on a stand and let it dry overnight. Avoid blow dryers as much as you can and don’t brush until it’s completely dry.

- Can I use regular hair products on my wig?

We recommend that you only use products that are made specifically for wigs. That way you can avoid any potential damage to your hairpiece and product buildup. There are great wig shampoos, conditioners, and other products available online and you will certainly find the one you like. It is also recommended that you use special brushes and combs for detangling since a wig is more fragile than your natural hair.

- Can my wig be dyed or colored?

If it’s a synthetic one, then definitely not. However, if it’s made from real human hair, in most cases you can dye it. You need to check with the store if the wig has been processed and dyed before and that will also help you in deciding whether to color it or not. Dying is a process that you should definitely not be doing yourself, no matter how experienced with coloring you are. Go to a professional and have them inspect the wig first and then color it if it’s deemed safe. In any case, never go for a lighter color, choose a darker one. Because wig dying is quite complicated, it is best to choose the correct color in the first place and if you want to change your style later, purchase another hairpiece in a different color.

- Are hot tools safe to use on a wig?

Hot tools should not be used on synthetic hair and should also be avoided with human hair as well. The head might damage the strands and shorten the lifespan of the wig if used frequently. The best option is to buy a pre-styled hairpiece and have two with different styles. That way you don’t have to fear any damage and you also save a lot of time.

- Can I shower or swim in my wig?

It is not recommended that you swim or shower while wearing your wig. Chemical in the pool water can damage the delicate hairs, as well as saltwater. The strands will also get tangled and matted which is a pain to brush through afterward. When going swimming, use a cap to protect your hair and washing of the wig is best done while it’s not attached.

- Can I sleep in my wig?

Depending on how you attach your wig, it might be the best that you take it off before you go to bed and place it on a holder. However, that means you have to attach the wig every morning which can take up a lot of time. Sleeping with a wig on is allowed only if you take proper measures to protect it. You either need to tie a scarf around your head or get your hair into a braid or a bun. If the hair is loose, it will be a nightmare in the morning to detangle but not only that, some of the hairs may fall out or break.

- Can I cut the hair on my wig?

Some hairpieces are already cut in different styles that you can choose from, but you might also want to customize it even more. The best way is to go to a hair professional that has experience in working with wigs. He or she will cut the wig to your preference so that it looks very natural and complements your face. The ends can also be made thinner to get that realistic look. What we do not recommend is doing a drastic style change; it is best to buy a hairpiece with a general style that you like and then simply tweaking it slightly. Avoid doing this yourself because cutting a wig is very different from cutting your own hair. You might make a mistake and ruin your wig completely.

- What are cushion bands and wig grippers?

A cushion band is a type of headband that’s filled with a special gel. It is worn in order to make wig wearing more comfortable. It is especially useful for people who have partial or complete hair loss. When someone is losing their hair, their scalp is very sensitive and sometimes even painful so a cushion band is used to prevent any discomfort from wearing a hairpiece. A wig gripper is a similar thing but its main use is making the wig stay in place. It is made from velour or similar fabric and it essentially grips the wig and keeps it from moving or falling off. Both are great wig accessories that you might want to consider because they will certainly make your life easier.

- Do wigs come pre-styled?

Some wigs do indeed come pre-styled. That’s a great thing because the wig is instantly ready to wear and you don’t have to worry about styling it yourself. However, some women choose to customize their hairpiece and make it their own. Both options work great, it all depends on your preferences.

- Do I need a wig liner?

If the wig doesn’t seem as comfortable or if your scalp is sensitive due to hair loss, you might need some type of wig liner. Many women prefer wearing a cap underneath the hairpiece in order to protect their hair and simply get it out of the way. The most basic cap that you can find is made out of a soft mesh material which is very comfortable. The mesh is also very thin so you will barely feel it on your head. However, if your scalp is very sensitive, we recommend a cap made out of cotton. It is slightly thicker and will protect your scalp and make the wig more comfortable to wear. Wig liners are very easy to clean and they can actually protect your wig as well. There are also wig grippers which are not whole caps but headbands that make the headpiece more comfortable.

- Can I wear a wig if my head sweats a lot?

Of course you can! That’s certainly not a problem whatsoever. The only thing you need to make sure is to wash your wig regularly because the sweat will be absorbed by the wig cap. Another thing you can do is to wear a wig liner because it will protect your hairpiece from getting sweaty and protect your scalp against irritation.

- How should I store my wig?

Proper storage is another important part of caring for your wig and protecting it against damage. We recommend that you purchase a wig stand along with the hairpiece because you’re certainly going to need it for storage. It is the best and easiest way to store your hair when you’re not wearing it and have it be ready to go. A stand is perfect for drying your wig as well. The only tip is to avoid Styrofoam stands because they can mess with the fit of the wig. The hair needs to be in a dry and cool place, away from sunlight.
